Knowledge (Kmag) Cyclone Recordings - Kano & Dynamic

Kano is no newcomer to drum & bass and the past eight years have seen his Sinuous Records imprint go from strength to strength but it's no secret that times have changed.

Now, keen to stay at the forefront of the scene, Kano and fellow producer Dynamic have joined forces unleashing Cyclone Recordings, a brand new label with the emphasis on releasing the freshest minimal and experimental dnb while retaining some of the techstep influences associated with the Sinuous family.

The label is focused on pushing music from a strong network of artists based around the globe including a number of up front breakthrough artists alongside more established names.

With a strong roster of emerging talent, some great tracks in the pipeline and a proven track record, the future looks promising for Cyclone. We spoke to co-label boss Kano to find out more...

What is it that appeals to you about the minimal sound?

I've always had a passion for the more experimental and intelligent sound, growing up listening to LTJ Bukem's Logical Progressionand the like. For the last eight years of running Sinuous Records I have released over 75 tracks of banging dancefloor.

Back when we started Sinuous that was what the audience was looking for, but a lot of people started to feel the tempo of dnb was getting too fast and it needed stepping down a gear, which opened up the doors to dubstep.

The more minimal sound is clearly what more people want to hear nowadays. Drum & bass is not just for the dancefloor anymore, people like to listen on their mp3 players, in the car, etc and they don't always want it to be full on.

The reason this excites me is because when the tempo is slowed down it gives you more scope to be more intelligent and technical with the production. I've found some extremely talented producers making this sound, which is definitely what encouraged me to start up Cyclone Recordings.

Sinuous has already built up a solid reputation, why did you decide to start a fresh imprint to put out this music?

As a record label owner I am constantly being sent tracks from some great producers, I wanted to start releasing it myself because I felt there weren't enough outlets out there for this particular sound.

However it was important to me to keep this sound separate from Sinuous Records because Sinuous has its own distinct style and has its own loyal following, so it made sense to start a brand new label with a fresh sound. It was nice to build something from the start again, working on a brand new project with new producers. ?

Does this mean that Sinuous will take a back seat?

Far from it, Sinuous is as busy as ever. I'm just working twice as hard! We've only just released another solo EP on vinyl with Brighton based Allied, Arts & Science. This release was a huge success for us considering these bad times in the market.

We have another 12" with Future Signal on the A-side and Katharsys on the flip, this will be hitting the shelves of your local record shop very soon. On Sinuous' digital side, we have theHidden Paths EP with various artists out now. So yeah, I'm very busy with Sinuous. ?

How did you and Dynamic come to be working together on this project?

Dynamic and I have been best mates for many years and we've always had the same passion and love for drum & bass. We started collaborating together, producing more minimal sounds and we wanted an imprint to start releasing our music.

Dynamic was keen to get involved with a label and asked for my help, plus I was looking for something new so the timing was right and we decided to start up a label together. Cyclone Recordings was born. ?

What else do you see in store for the label?

Bigger projects. We would like to get an album out by the end of the year. We've got some exciting new producers onboard the Cyclone imprint and we're just looking to push things forward, to make the label grow and hopefully rise to the top.

Our next release is with Amoss, On the A-side is Glurg Monsterand AA side is Create More, which are absolutely outstanding tracks. Amoss haven't been on the scene for very long but their production is off the hook and they're already getting a lot of love (check out our recent feature and guest mix from Amoss).

Also, don't forget about our last release CY003 Save Us, which is a collaboration of myself, Dynamic, the mighty Outrage and Russia's very own Flame.

Our aim is to be one of those labels that people talk about, to release tunes that people don't want to miss out on... tunes to be loved.
